PERMACULTURE

Permaculture was founded in Australia by Bill Mollison in the late seventies. It is a system of design to create sustainable and productive human environments in balance and harmony with nature.

Permaculture creates systems ecologically correct, economically viable, that fulfill it’s own needs, don’t exploit or pollute and are sustainable in the long term.

The idea of sustainability is not a new one. Ancestors had this information and made sure to pass it on, generation to generation. One of the most important parts of this self-preservation was in acknowledging our interconnection with nature in a holistic way. At some point in time we stopped listening to our elders. Especially since the Industrial Revolution we began using up resources and disconnecting from the web of nature that supports all life on this planet. OPA aims to reestablish this interconnection with nature through Permaculture. We return to the brilliance of our ancestors with respect to the reality of our times.

OPA’s objectives in the urban permaculture area:

1) Demonstration
- Alternative building techniques for the urban environment
- Renewable energy
- Rainwater collection & storage
- Composting toilets
- Native plant nursery
- Urban gardening and food production
- Veggie oil fuel

2) Education & Extension
- Permaculture courses
- Children and Youth Computer Program
- Vegetable Oil Fuel program
- Library and Publications
- English Language Program
